On this day:
In 1965, Mariner 4 flew past Mars, becoming the first spacecraft to take pictures of another planet and send them back to Earth.

In 1976, by a margin of 130 to 124 in the House of Commons, Canadian MPs voted to end the death penalty. Bill C-84 became law 12 days later.

In 2018, Angelique Kerber defeated Serena Williams 6-3, 6-3 to win the women’s tennis championship at Wimbledon.
