City of Powell River’s parks, recreation and culture department has released its digital Active Living Guide for spring, offering a wide range of programs and activities for residents of all ages.
Registration is now open for an exciting recreational, fitness and aquatic program lineup to keep community members active and engaged this season.
According to sport and recreation program coordinator Alex Craig, this spring’s offerings cater to various interests, from athletic training to outdoor adventures and hands-on learning experiences.
“Whether you're looking to dive into a new hobby or sharpen your athletic skills, there's something for everyone this season,” says Craig.
For youth looking to stay active, beach volleyball training and play sessions at the Willingdon Beach courts offer skill building and friendly competition for both beginners and experienced players.
Those interested in a different kind of weekend activity can join the Saturday Morning Breakfast Club, where children will learn to cook classic morning meals in a fun, interactive environment.
Outdoor enthusiasts can explore the region’s coastal waters with an Oyster and Clam Digging class, where participants will learn sustainable harvesting techniques before enjoying a beachside cookout. Meanwhile, Fishing 101 will cover casting techniques, fish cleaning and preservation.
A community-wide garage sale is also returning this spring, set for Saturday, May 24, from 9 to 11 am on the recreation complex’s arena dry floor. Participants can reserve an eight-foot table for $20 or a double table for $35, with a registration deadline of May 16.
Health and fitness program coordinator Alex Young has highlighted a range of fitness-focused programs, including participation in Move for Health Day on Saturday, May 10.
“We’re going to be offering a limited number of registration spots for a mini-triathlon with a 400-metre swim, seven-kilometre spin bike challenge and a 2.5-kilometre run through our trails,” explains Young.
New offerings this season include a 30-minute Zumba Mobility drop-in class on Mondays and trail running clinics for beginners and intermediate runners. Community favourites such as seniors wellness, spin and Pilates classes will also be making a return.
“We’ve seen such great attendance numbers for our classes this winter that we’re looking forward to continuing our programs with everyone this spring,” adds Young.
Swim programs remain a key highlight of the spring active living guide, with various lessons, swim programs, lifeguard recertifications and aquatic fitness classes.
“Favourites such as Aqua Yoga, Deep Fit and Water Wellness continue this spring,” says aquatic program supervisor Tami Wood.
Lifeguard recertification courses will be offered in June, with a waterfront recertification on June 14 and a pool recertification on June 8, both of which are valid for two years.
Additionally, Sea Snake Saturdays continue to slither into the main pool, running from 1:30 to 3:30 pm on March 29, April 26, May 31 and June 28.
