In just a few short years, Laochra Construction has transformed from a modest operation into one of qathet’s most rapidly expanding contracting companies. Owner and longtime qathet region resident Gerald Cote credits this growth to a commitment he describes as “communication, quality and the drive to make every customer happy.”

Reflecting on the past year, Gerald admits that expanding so quickly brought both rewards and challenges. At one point, the company tackled five major jobs simultaneously—ranging from residential projects to a commercial renovation of a medical clinic—all while working seven days a week, 12 hours a day.

“It was really hectic,” recalls Gerald. “Managing several large-scale projects at once was tough, but honesty and transparency with clients carried us through. When they know you’re doing your best, it makes a big difference.”

As the workload ballooned, Gerald recognized the need to adjust staffing to maintain the high quality of artistry Laochra Construction strives for. He chose to shrink the team slightly rather than compromise on standards.

“A few jobs got out of control because of how hectic it was,” he says. “I remediated those issues at my own cost, ensuring clients stayed happy. People are only human, mistakes happen, but it’s how you address them that really counts.”

Gerald’s role has evolved alongside the company’s growth. While he still picks up tools on site, he increasingly finds himself acting as a general contractor—organizing financing, sourcing materials, scheduling trades and managing client relations.

“I’m focused on ensuring that projects run smoothly and clients are heard,” he explains. “My job is to deal with the complexities behind the scenes so our team can focus on the work itself.”

Although Laochra Construction works on commercial and residential projects alike, Gerald’s passion is for custom home building and renovations.

“I love collaborating with homeowners,” he says. “Often, they don’t have a clear idea of what’s possible, so I draw on my 21 years of experience to help them turn their vision into a reality. It’s all about communication, budgeting and making sure we deliver the best quality they can afford.”

Gerald emphasizes that the process should feel approachable, not daunting. Whether it’s a bathroom renovation, foundation work or a completely new build, he aims to make the experience as smooth as possible.

“We can order anything; there are so many materials and products out there,” he notes. “It’s not rocket science. It’s about being clear on what people want and finding the most efficient path to get there.”

A key point of pride for Gerald is the company’s local footprint. Every member of the team lives in the qathet region, and Laochra’s projects consistently involve local talent.

“We’re supporting local families, and I’m really proud of that,” he says. “I’d rather earn a little less on a job and make sure the customer is truly happy. That’s how you build long-term relationships.”

As the business looks to the year ahead, including a new builder’s warranty that will allow it to take on projects within city jurisdiction, Gerald stresses the importance of gratitude.

“I’m very thankful to all of our clients and community members who have supported us. We wouldn’t be here without their trust and recommendations. We look forward to continuing to provide quality work and honest service, hopefully for many years to come.”
