Country music is huge in Powell River, but the number of actual country music concerts from the past decade could probably be counted on one hand. As for the upcoming Country Western Saloon Dance, a fundraiser with prizes for best western costume, poker tables, country dance-offs and more, it might the only event of its kind ever in Powell River.
“We used to put on a dance once a year and then there were a lot of dances happening, so we decided not to for awhile,” says dance organizer and Powell River Brain Injury Society executive director Debbie Dee, “but this year we thought it would be neat to have a good country dance and great way to end the summer.”
A joint fundraiser for the brain injury society’s workshops and art programs and Canadian Martial Arts Academy students’ upcoming trip to Okinawa, Japan, the dance features Vancouver-based country band Rich Hope and his Blue Rich Rangers in their first appearance in Powell River.
“Having never been to Powell River, I am excited to see it,” says Hope. “I am always happy when I am able to support charities and programs that foster confidence, physical well-being and ability in people, particularly young people.”
The event will take place Saturday night at the historic Dwight Hall in Townsite, a venue Dee calls “the grand old lady of the dance halls” and a perfect spot for a country-themed dance, she says.
The party will also include a door-prize draw, cash bar, a 50/50 draw and more. Minors are not permitted and rides home from parents of the martial arts students will be available by donation.
Tickets are $20 and available at the Peak office, Canadian Martial Arts Academy and Powell River Brain Injury Society office.
“It’s going to be a lot of fun dancing with friends,” says Dee.
Hope agrees and says he and is Blue Rich Rangers are ready to put on a real old-fashioned hoedown.
“People can expect that we will bring a great show and a dance,” he says. “What else do you need on a Saturday night?”
