With years of experience installing, servicing and cleaning wood-burning appliances, fireplaces and chimneys, Cadam Construction has built a solid reputation in Powell River for delivering peace of mind for its customers.

Now, after nine years in Powell River, Cadam owners Curtis and Tiffany Adam have opened up a showroom so customers canexplore a selection of wood-burning, gas and electric stoves, and fireplaces, along with accessories and maintenance supplies.

“Our specialty is in wood energy appliances, though we do sell electric and gas units as well,” says Tiffany. “We decided to open a showroom, because if you’re like me, you want to see and feel it before making that kind of investment.”

Cadam’s selection includes brands such as Napoleon Fireplaces, Quadra-Fire, IronStrike, and Astria Fireplaces.

“We carry these brands because they are good quality and have different features that set them apart,” she adds. “We personally have a Napoleon wood stove, Napoleon fireplaces, and a Napoleon wood hybrid forced-air furnace. We definitely believe in what we sell.”

Many of the company’s customers are people who are looking to replace older wood stoves or fireplace inserts with new, clean-burning, high-efficiency ones, says Tiffany.

She explains that when customers come in and express interest in either replacing an aging appliance or are looking for a wood stove for their new home, one of the first things the company does is perform an on-site evaluation. Tiffany says customers benefit from Curtis’s years of experience and knowledge of heating systems.

“We send Curtis there to do the evaluation and suggest options that will meet the need of a customer’s space and budget,” says Tiffany. “When someone asks, we tell them there isn’t a single ‘best’ stove; everyone has different requirements and burning practices and some stoves suit better than others.”

Curtis is highly skilled in helping customers determine what the best new wood-burning appliance and chimney would be for their homes and is able to examine problems with existing systems, too. He has a diploma in construction engineering technology from Northern Alberta Institute of Technology.

“Curtis has a real knack for being able to troubleshoot and fix issues,” says Tiffany. “Sometimes customers come to us for help with a wood stove that is not drafting properly, but they don’t necessarily want a new one. Curtis is really talented at figuring out how to make adjustments to maximize efficiency.”

Regular maintenance and cleaning is key to keeping a heating system working consistently and avoiding home fires, she adds.

Besides installation and servicing, Curtis has also made a name for himself as a certified WETT (Wood Energy Technical Transfer) inspector in Powell River.

Before an insurance company will sell a potential homeowner insurance for a home with a wood-burning appliance it requires a WETT inspection. The visual inspection is conducted to determine if the appliance was installed safely and is in compliance with all fire and building code regulations. The inspection looks at clearances, chimney heights and signs of appliance deterioration. If concerns are identified, the inspector then makes recommendations that the appliance is checked and, if necessary, repaired by a certified technician.

“WETT inspections offer our customers more than just peace of mind,” says Curtis. “If you have a fireplace or wood stove it is so important to make sure these appliances are installed properly and inspected for your family’s safety.”
