United comes from behind for win

Unbeaten streak continues for over 35 soccer squad

Powell River United O35 soccer team travelled to Parksville on Sunday with a full squad of 16 players with an eye to keeping its unbeaten record in tact.

The game started with Parksville taking the play to United and putting it on its heels for the first 15 minutes resulting in a goal and United being down 1-0 early in the game.

United was able to get its ground game sorted out and turned the play in its favour resulting in a nice play from Lee Illing setting up Dean Piccinin who put the visiting squad back even at 1-1. Both teams had fairly even possession and chances on net and resulted in a 1-1 score at halftime.

The second half started much the same as the first with Parksville taking it to United and firing another one into the back of the net putting United down 2-1.

United kept its composure and hard work and eventually was awarded a penalty shot due to a hand ball in the box by a Parksville defender. Tony Carroll stepped up to take the shot and placed it neatly into the side of the net, beating the keeper and evening the score at 2-2.

From there both teams battled and had chances either way until a cross sent into the box was met by the head of Carroll and sailed into the back of the net for a 3-2 United lead.

There were a few tense moments for the visiting team as Parksville had a couple of great chances late in the game, but goalie Rick Bombardir was up to the challenge and kept the ball out of the net giving United a 3-2 win and helping to keep its unbeaten streak alive.
