Smithers Civic Centre is the host venue for the 2024/2025 BC Hockey U18 Tier 3 Provincial Hockey Championship.

A loss to Whistler Winterhawks on Wednesday, March 20, dropped Powell River U18 Kings’ record at the BC Hockey Tier 3 championship in Smithers to one win and two losses.

Powell River led 2-0 at the midway point of the first period courtesy of goals from Beau Jameson Gagne (assisted by Ben Belyea) and Lucas Wadsworth (Noah Culos and Evan Penner), but Whistler responded with a pair of their own to tie the score at two goals apiece after 20 minutes of play.

Wadsworth’s second of the game, set up by Paxton Schreiber and Jeremy Pukesh, gave the Kings another lead early in the second period. Again, the Winterhawks replied, this time with three straight goals to lead 5-3. Schreiber assisted on Evan Piniewski’s goal later in the period, which cut the deficit in half prior to intermission.

Whistler took control of the game with four straight goals in the third period before Belyea answered, from Wadsworth, to make it 9-5. Winterhawks reached double-digits with three minutes to play for a 10-5 final.

Whistler is atop Pool B in the 10-team tournament with a record of three wins and no losses. Powell River is third in the same pool, trailing South Okanagan and ahead of Dawson Creek and the host team from Smithers.

Powell River defeated Dawson Creek on March 17 and lost to South Okanagan the next day. Next up for the Kings is a second game on Wednesday, March 20, against Smithers (7:30 pm).

Medal round games take place on March 20 and 21.
