Powell River Villa members, including current coach Tony Leach [third from left] and manager Chris McDonough [fourth from left] were on hand for the club’s induction into the Soccer Hall of Fame of British Columbia last weekend.
Villa, which has been operating for more than 50 years, entered the hall under the Organizations of Distinction category as part of the class of 2024.
Prior to the ceremony, which took place in Burnaby on Saturday, November 2, McDonough commented on the unexpected recognition, saying “it’s a great honour for soccer in the community.”
Villa had the weekend off in order to attend the function. Its match versus Vic West will be scheduled near the end of the season, according to Vancouver Island Soccer League (VISL) executive director Vince Greco.
“They had the night off from play, and celebrated by being the last team to leave the function,” said Greco, in his weekly recap of VISL action.
The club resumes its VISL schedule this weekend versus Sooke Celtic FC at Fred Milne Turf in Sooke. The two teams are tied for ninth place in points in Division 1 standings, but Villa holds a game in hand. Game time on Saturday, November 9, is 4 pm.
