Powell River Villa (above, in red at Hampton Park in Victoria last weekend) started the VISL season with three consecutive clean sheets but have now failed to score themselves over the last three matches.

Powell River Villa travelled to southern Vancouver Island to play Gorge FC in Victoria on October 5 and were handed a second consecutive 4-0 loss.

"Unfortunately, we ran into discipline problems again and had a man sent off early in the first half, putting us at a disadvantage for nearly 65 minutes,” said Villa manager Chris McDonough. “We held Gorge right until before the halftime whistle when we gave up a misplaced cross that found the top corner.”

Villa pushed for an equalizer in the second half, but eventually broke down defensively, according to McDonough, and gave up some late goals.

“Even down a man I thought we played well and had some good scoring chances of our own, most notably Jacob Duyvestyn’s shot going off the post in the 25th minute,” he added.

In addition to not picking up points over the past two weeks, Villa has now gone three straight matches without scoring. Victoria Highlanders beat Villa by the same 4-0 score on September 28. To start the season, Villa tied Sooke 0-0, defeated Lakehill 1-0, then tied Nanaimo 0-0.

“Obviously we have to be better on the discipline side and our finishing needs work, but we feel confident in our group and look forward to playing back at home this weekend," said McDonough.

Villa host Bays United on Saturday, October 12. Kickoff is at 1:30 pm.

In other VISL Division 1 action last weekend, Lakehill defeated Cowichan 3-1, Vic West edged Victoria Highlanders 1-0 and Comox thumped Sooke 6-1. Bays United and Nanaimo played to a 2-2 tie.

After five weeks of play, Division 1 standings are as follows: Vic West, 15 points; Lakehill, 12; Gorge, nine; Comox, seven; Highlanders, six; Villa, five; Bays United, five; Cowichan, four; Nanaimo, three; and Sooke, two.
