TRIPLE THREAT: Powell River Villa striker Jerod Timothy [left] accounted for three of his team’s goals in an important win at home on November 23.

Powell River Villa moved out of last place in Vancouver Island Soccer League (VISL) standings last weekend with a 4-2 win over visiting Nanaimo United. Villa and Nanaimo are now tied in points with nine, but Powell River has one game in hand.

The three points earned in the win also leaves Villa within striking distance of a pair of Division 1 teams (Sooke and Gorge) that are tied for seventh place with 12 points each, and sixth place Cowichan FC (14 points).

“We have been playing well the last few weeks and just coming up short, so it was nice to pull all together for a massive win,” said Villa manager Chris McDonough. “This puts us within reach of the mid-table teams.”

Villa’s striker partnership of Jerod Timothy and Niko Cristante created chances all afternoon long, according to McDonough, with Timothy scoring three goals and Cristante chipping in with one.

“Defensively, we were solid with the back line,” said McDonough. “James Timothy, Chico Murphy, Grant Hooper and Jacob Duyvesteyn did a good job limiting Nanaimo’s chances and some timely saves by goalkeeper Emil Valing helped maintain the lead.”

Undefeated Vic West leads the division with 33 points.

Villa’s next match is a road game against Victoria Highlanders on Saturday, November 30.
