Powell River U18 Kings edge Dawson Creek at BC championship

Local minor hockey team opens pursuit of provincial title at tournament in Smithers

Smithers Civic Centre is the host venue for the 2024/2025 BC Hockey U18 Tier 3 Provincial Hockey Championship.

Powell River U18 Kings and Dawson Creek U18 Canucks squared off in the first game for both teams at the 2024/2025 BC Hockey U18 Tier 3 Championship in Smithers on Monday, March 17.

After giving up a goal in the first minute of play, one marker from Lucas Wadsworth and a pair by Ben Belyea gave the Kings a 3-2 lead through 20 minutes. Dawson Creek also led 2-1 at one point. Chase Fontaine assisted on both Belyea goals.

Evan Piniewski and Paxton Schreiber combined to set up Jeremy Pukesh's eventual game-winner for Powell River on a power play midway through the second period. The 4-2 lead held until the 7:10 mark of period three, when Dawson Creek cut the deficit in half, making the final 4-3.

Powell River faces South Okanagan on Tuesday, March 18, at 2:30 pm. 10 teams are competing for the title in Smithers.
