In their fifth event of the competitive season, Powell River Aquatic Club athletes travelled south July 12 to 14 where they were hosted by the Salt Spring Island Stingrays.
“Typically there is very little attendance to the Salt Spring meet because it’s so far away, but this time we had 11 [members] go,” said assistant coach Alex Jevons. “The club’s meet attendance has really picked up this season, which means there are more chances [for coaches] to see how the swimmers compete.”
The event included an open-water swim at the island’s St. Mary’s Lake for swimmers in division four and above. Club members Shea O'Donnell, Reeve Morwood, Macklan Boyd and Eli Hueston all competed in the one kilometre open-water event.
“It’s really important for swimmers to get to compete in other ways rather than only short course,” added Jevons. “That way they develop as well-rounded swimmers.”
No results were provided for the open water swim.
Division one results:
Willa Venselaar placed sixth in 50-metre backstroke, seventh in 50-metre breaststroke and 11th in the 100-metre freestyle. Shunsei Kita-Sternberg placed eighth in the 100-metre IM and 50-metre butterfly, 12th in 50-metre backstroke and 16th in 50 metre freestyle.
Division two
Russell O'Donnell placed third in 50-metre freestyle, fourth in 50-metre backstroke, 50-metre breaststroke and 100 metre-freestyle, and sixth in the 100-metre IM and 50-metre fly.
Division four
Indy Morwood placed 19th in 100 metre-breaststroke, 21st in the 200-metre IM and 27th in 100-metre freestyle. Yoshun Kita-Sternberg placed 16th in 50-metre freestyle.
Division five
Shea O'Donnell placed 21st in the 50-metre freestyle and 24th in 50-metre fly.
Reeve Morwood placed fifth in the 50-metre freestyle, sixth in the 100-metre freestyle and ninth in 50-metre fly.
Macklan Boyd placed ninth in the 100-metre breaststroke, 10th in the 50-metre and 100-metre freestyle and 11th in the 50-metre fly.
Eli Hueston placed 10th in the 100-metre breaststroke and 11th in 50-metre freestyle and 50-metre fly.
Novice
Novice swimmers taking part on the weekend were Isla O'Donnell and Scarlett Venselaar.
The next meet for the club was the Saanich Peninsula Piranhas' Sprint Challenge, held at the Saanich Commonwealth Pool on July 20 and 21.
“This is the team’s last swim meet before regionals,” said Jevons. “It’s very important as it’s setting the swimmers up for how they will go into regionals.”
Regionals will take place in Nanaimo from August 2 to 4.
