On the final day of the BC Hockey League season (Sunday, March 30), Powell River Kings are playing for pride, and have an opportunity to play spoiler.

Already eliminated from the playoff race, Powell River faces Prince George for the second straight day with the host Spruce Kings needing a win to secure the eighth and final postseason spot in the BCHL Coastal Conference. Powell River will finish 10th, but who will finish ninth is to be determined.

Last night, Eliot Compton scored twice for Powell River in a 5-4 loss in front of 1,504 fans at Kopar Memorial Arena. Sam Grabner and Eli Friedman also scored for the Kings, who trailed 2-0 early in the second period and 5-2 in the third before a rally to force overtime fell short.

Powell River goaltender Vincent Lamberti turned aside 39 of the 44 shots he faced, which was 18 more than his counterpart had to contend with.

Following the win, Prince George had to wait for later results from Langley, where the Rivermen needed to lose in regulation to Chilliwack in order for the Spruce Kings to remain in the playoff race. Chilliwack won that game 7-5.

Sunday’s finale starts at 3 pm.
