Powell River Minor Baseball celebrated a silver medal at the U13A West Provincials, which were held in Tsawwassen from August 8 to 11.
U13A Pioneers started the 10-team tournament with back-to-back round-robin wins over Tsawwassen A’s and Nanaimo Pirates, which shocked the competition.
With their spirits riding high after playing their best two games of the season, positive momentum was halted after losses to Ladner Red Sox and Vancouver Mounties. However, the Pioneers placed among the top four teams and advanced through to the semi-finals.
Coach Scott Peters reminded the team that they had been on a journey this season and exceeded their expectations.
“It is time to enjoy the moments with your teammates because these are the memories you will look back on.”
This invigorated the players and they were able to win the semi-final game against Duncan Tigers.
Pioneers faced Vancouver Mounties again, this time for the gold medal. The game turned out to be an exciting nail-biter all the way into the sixth inning, but the Mounties were able to move ahead with their strong batting skills and the Pioneers were unable to catch up.
Silver is always bittersweet but the players embraced their underdog success story and walked away proud to have played their best games of the season. It was an exciting experience for the team, families and all of the fans staying tuned in at home through social media.
Pioneers secured a berth in the provincials one week earlier at the Vancouver Island Championships.
