Powell River Kings’ defender Dylan Hewlett has committed to play hockey at Simon Fraser University (SFU) next season.
The 20-year-old was the longest tenured player on the Kings’ roster during the 2022/2023 BC Hockey League (BCHL) season, with his debut coming in 2018/2019 as an affiliate. He appeared in 136 games for the Kings, scoring five goals and adding 27 assists.
“Powell River became a second home to me,” said Hewlett. “I have so many people to thank, such as my billets, my coaches and especially my teammates.”
Hewlett set career highs in goals (three), assists (12) and points (15) last season while playing in all 54 games. He added one more goal in five playoff games, and won the team’s most sportsmanlike award.
Hewlett will now join a powerhouse Red Leafs team at Simon Fraser that is coming off back-to-back British Columbia Intercollegiate Hockey League (BCIHL) championships. He will be reunited with former Kings’ teammate Caleb Parkhouse.
“I'm really looking forward to going back to school,” added Hewlett. “I’m also excited about playing a shorter but highly competitive hockey schedule next year.”
The Kings thanked Hewlett for everything he accomplished with the organization, on and off the ice, and wished him the best at SFU.
