Powell River Kings have announced the signing of 2004-born defender Shawn Ramsey for the upcoming BC Hockey league (BCHL) season.

Ramsey, who is from Mississauga, Ontario, has spent his entire junior career up to this point south of the border. He suited up in 28 games for the Chicago Steel of the United States Hockey League during the 2021/2022 season, before heading up north to Wisconsin to play for the Chippewa Steel in the North American Hockey League this past year. In 55 games for the Steel, Ramsey scored two goals and added 16 assists.

Kings originally acquired Ramsey’s playing rights last season in a trade with the Central Canada Hockey League’s Navan Grads in November, which saw forward Colin MacDougall go the other way. After months of work to officially get Ramsey to Powell River, Kings’ general manager Chad van Diemen is excited to add a player of his caliber to the blueline.

“We are looking forward to him joining our team this season,” said van Diemen. “He’s a motivated player who wants to succeed. He brings junior experience to our back end and is a guy we will look to lean on in key situations.”

Kings start training camp on September 1. The preseason kicks off September 9 in Coquitlam.
