Peak contest kicks off for Women's World Cup of Soccer

The 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup of Soccer kicks off this week in Australia and New Zealand. Olympic champion Canada faces Nigeria on the opening day (July 20).

Hardcore soccer enthusiasts, or casual viewers drawn in by the global scale of the event, are invited to take part in the Peak’s Women's World Cup of Soccer contest.

To enter, predict the final standings of group B (Australia, Canada, Nigeria, Republic of Ireland) from first to fourth place, and the total number of goals Canada will score in their three group stage matches.

Also, choose an overall champion and runner-up for the 32-team tournament. Countries competing (world ranking in brackets) are: Argentina (28), Australia (10), Brazil (8), Canada (7), China (14), Colombia (25), Costa Rica (36), Denmark (13), England (4), France (5), Germany (2), Haiti (53), Italy (16), Jamaica (43), Japan (11), Morocco (72), Netherlands (9), New Zealand (26), Nigeria (40), Norway (12), Panama (52), Philippines (46), Portugal (21), Republic of Ireland (22), South Africa (54), South Korea (17), Spain (6), Switzerland (20), Sweden (3), United States (1), Vietnam (32) and Zambia (77).

Six countries have longshot odds to win the tournament at 500-1, while the USA is the betting favourite at 11-4. Canada's odds to win are 25-1

Email choices (Group B final standings; Canada’s group stage goals total; overall champion and runner-up) to [email protected] for a chance to win a $100 local restaurant gift certificate, four Patricia Theatre movie passes, future Powell River Villa game passes and a one year subscription to the Peak.

Entries must be received by 11 pm on Tuesday, July 18. The contest is only open to qathet region residents. Include your name in the submission email.

Prizes will have to be picked up at the Peak office (Unit-F 4493 Marine Avenue, Powell River) after the Women's World Cup final match on August 20.
