Pitbulls win game on the road

Abbott to represent U-16 female hockey at BC games

An all-female hockey team travelled to Victoria recently to play two exhibition games in the Island PeeWee Female C League.

Lockeroom Pitbulls, Powell River Minor Hockey Association PeeWee Female hockey team, played their first game against Victoria Ice Hawks. The girls came out strong, controlling much of the play. At 5:32 of the first period Calli-Ann Abbott scored assisted by Sydni Piccinin and Bayley Hollingsworth.

Ice Hawkes then held Pitbulls off the score board until early in the third when Hollingsworth scored from Stephanie Edwards and Abbott at 17:51. Hollingsworth scored her second of the game two minutes later assisted by Abbott and Katie Hopper.

In the last two minutes of the game Edwards found the back of the net assisted by Hollingsworth and Leah Wilson. The Pitbulls won 4-0, and net minder Claudia Piccinin recorded her first shutout.

Game two was against Juan De Fuca Grizzlies. Once again the girls came out strong and Abbott found the back of the net within 30 seconds.

At just over a minute left in the first, Edwards scored assisted by Marissa Bolton and Tyra Thulin. Then with 0.6 seconds left Wilson scored assisted by Abbott and Claire Mavin.

Abbott scored two quick ones at the start of the second assisted by Sarah Shelton and Annika Krowitz. Hollingsworth scored unassisted, then Edwards teamed up with Hopper to round out the scoring in the second. Up 7-0, the Pitbulls concentrated on their passing and back checking in the third and were able to help Claudia to her second shutout. It was a successful first trip for the girls, who worked hard, learned a great deal and earned the wins.

Recently, Abbott was successful in her bid to represent the U-16 High Performance team. She will compete as one of 20 girls in zone six female hockey at BC Winter Games in Vernon at the end of February.
