Pee Wee Tim Horton’s Rep team played an important Vancouver Island Amateur Hockey Association League game against Parksville’s Oceanside at Hap Parker Arena on Sunday, December 4. The last time these two teams met the game ended in a 9-9 shootout, so there was a lot of firepower on both of these teams.
Both teams played tight for the first 14 minutes of the game before the goals started coming. Only one goal was scored in the first period and that came from Bryson Cecconi by way of Keaton Mastrodonato and Tyler Carpendale on the powerplay.
Oceanside tied it up early in the second, but Juanre Naude put Powell River up 2-1 about five minutes later on a set-up from Brett Kinley.
Oceanside scored a powerplay goal with seven minutes left in the second to tie 2-2.
Oceanside got their first lead of the game at 16:29 of the third at even strength to make it 3-2, but the lead was short-lived as Carpendale scored less than a minute later from Mastrodonato and Cecconi.
Powell River took the lead mid-point through the third when Carpendale fired one from the slot when set up by Mastrodonato. Thirty seconds later Cecconi scored his second of the game on the powerplay from Carpendale and Mastrodonato to make it 5-3.
Oceanside didn’t quit and scored the next two goals to tie it 5-5 with just over three minutes to go.
But with only two and a half minutes left, Naude tucked one in at the post from Kinley for a 6-5 lead, followed by Cecconi’s hat trick goal from Mastrodonato with just over a minute to go for a 7-5 victory.
