Cobras qualify for provincials

Easy win enters team into Coastal Cup draw

Powell River Cobras, the defending BC Soccer Provincial Champions, have qualified to defend their title this July in Kelowna.

The U14 girls travelled to Victoria to play the Lower Vancouver Island league champions, Gorge, on March 3. Since this was the biggest game of the season thus far the team sacrificed schooling and left on the noon ferry on Friday in preparation for their Saturday kickoff.

The game was played at Hampton Park and although the sky was blue the wind played havoc with the game. Heavy winds frustrated both teams however the Powell River girls persevered and scored three goals. If not for the heroics of Gorge goalkeeper the Cobras could easily have tripled the goal count.

With the 3-0 victory the girls have qualified for provincials as well as entered into the Coastal Cup draw, which includes teams from West and North Vancouver, Richmond, Surrey, Burnaby, the Fraser Valley and Vancouver Island.

Members of the team include Destiny Dendewicz, Elise Hocking, Ricci Leitch, Sydney Liknes, Cassidy Ball, Emily Mayenburg, Ondreah Kristof, Braea Mayenburg, Brittany Harry, Callie McNeil, Allahna Somji, Sydney Hanson, MacKenzie Balzan, Santana Heutzelmann, Rachel Horspool, Calli-Ann Abbott and Emily White.
