Vancouver Island Soccer League (VISL) action returns to Timberlane Park this weekend with Powell River Villa hosting Sooke Celtic FC in the Division 1 opener for both clubs.

“We have five youth players who are ready to make the step to senior soccer: Tyler Cramb, Dane Slack, Amile, Sol Reghelin and Jannick from Germany,” said Villa coach Tony Leach. “The team has been working hard at practice and most guys have been playing some summer soccer tournaments, so they have come out in good shape.”

Villa has also signed a player from Nanaimo, Thompson Nelson, who has previously played with some of the players on the current Villa roster.

“We aim to compete in every game and stay in Division 1,” added Leach.

Sooke was promoted to VISL Division 1 after finishing the 2023/2024 season in the upper echelon of Division 2 standings and advancing to the semi-finals of the Jackson Cup, which has been contested since 1915.

“We expect them to be a good team,” said Villa manager/assistant coach Chris McDonough.

Kickoff is at 1:30 pm on Saturday, September 7. Admission is $5. Season passes ($40) will be available at the gate.
