Charity game attracts newcomers

Tied games lead to exciting finish

Powell River Lawn Bowling Club hosted a charity tournament recently, designed to attract newcomers to the sport.

There were 16 teams participating, comprised of one novice from the community and one member of the club. Each of the 32 participants paid $10 to play, with the proceeds slated for a local charity. The event ended with a barbeque.

The teams played two 10-end games with all players bowling two bowls.

Two teams tied for first place, so the novice player from each winning team had to play a two-end game. That also ended in a tie, so one more end was played to determine a winner. That led to an exciting finish for the winning team.

Novice Maggie Hathaway and club member Rheal Leon were the victors. Second place went to novice Teresa Lang and club member Len Mimeault.

The novice had the honour of choosing the local charity and Hathaway chose Powell River Therapeutic Riding Association as the recipient of the $320 cheque.
