Aces split in two and post strong results

Girls place second and third against island teams

Aces Volleyball team travelled from Powell River to Nanaimo on Sunday to take part in the U13 Girls’ playday.

With sixteen players, Aces had enough girls to enter two teams—Team Doug and Team Diana.

Team Doug defeated Comox 25-8, 25-18; beat Nanaimo 25-14, 25-21; beat Powell River’s Team Diana 25-22, 25-23: and got by Campbell River Crush 25-15, 25-20. The team placed first overall in pool play and played Nanaimo again for first place overall in playoffs. The girls won the first set 25-16, lost the second set 25-17 and lost a nail-biter in the third 15-13. They finished in second place overall.

Team Diana beat Campbell River Crush 25-15, 25-20; beat Comox in a close match 25-19, 21-25, 15-13; and lost to Nanaimo 18-25, 22-25. They placed third in pool play and played off for third place overall against Comox. The match was very close, however Aces prevailed, winning 25-22, 25-23.

Team Doug was comprised of Matilda Bertrand, Melinda Boyd, Maddie Yule, Kate Fisher, Paige Lawson, Amelia Vincent, Lauren Mander and Hailey Kenmuir. “This weekend they passed and served quite well and we saw some good aggressive play at the net,” said Doug Skinner, coach. Outstanding server was Lawson and outstanding net play went to Yule.

Team Diana players were Tyana Sacree, Bayley Hollingsworth, Chloe Elzer, Kayla Reed, Katie Tuba, Meggan Skorey, Annika Pfeifer and Hope Lechner. “The girls know they would have won more games if they passed more precisely,” said Skinner. “Good serving by Pfeifer and Sacree and a great left-handed blast by Lechner really helped.”

Next up Aces will play at home 11 am to 4:30 pm on Sunday, February 26 at Brooks Secondary School gymnasium.
