It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our brother, Robert James Merrick of Powell River, who passed away on December 26, 2023, after a couple of strokes and a decline in health. Rob was born in Vancouver on March 19, 1951, and raised in Powell River from the age of three.
He was predeceased by his father Frederick Merrick, mother Patricia Brown, stepfather Norman Brown and brother Terry Merrick. He is survived by brothers Wayne Egeland and Gary Merrick (Tina); sisters Lynda Hunter (Ian) and Susan Walmsley (Ian); nieces and nephews; and his much-loved uncle James Mayers (Bud/Jim). Rob was in the logging industry for more than 40 years and did various jobs, but for the majority of it he loved driving logging trucks.
When he could, Rob grew a great veggie garden and also tinkered with woodworking, making beautiful burl clocks and turned wooden bowls. He loved to drive around Powell River just to check things out.
A big thank-you to Julie at Julie’s Airport Cafe, where Rob went most mornings for tea, for checking in on Rob from time to time, and to her staff. The family would also like to thank the nurses on the hospital’s fourth floor for helping Robbie during his final weeks of life. No service by request.
