Mary “Penny” Eleanor Mebs, beloved wife, mother, grandmother and dedicated registered nurse, peacefully departed on December 22, 2023, at Evergreen Care Home. Penny, born on March 28, 1934, in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, was an extraordinary woman who dedicated her life to the service of others.
Graduating from the University of Alberta in Edmonton, she obtained her RN training. She then came to Powell River, where she served as a nurse at Powell River General Hospital for seven years and Powell River Public Health Unit for the following 30 years. During her years as a nurse, she survived a plane crash in 1962 in the line of duty while heading to Lasqueti Island. Her resilience and commitment to her line of work were unwavering. She also founded the Head Injury Society of Powell River in the 1990s to bring awareness to, support and provide services to those who have been affected.
Penny was known for her outgoing charisma, kindheartedness, generosity and her love for babies and children. She also enjoyed boating, gardening, crochet and knitting. She especially loved travelling, with one of her favourite places to visit being Hawaii.
Penny and her husband, Arthur “Helmut” Mebs were married in 1960. She is survived by Arthur and their three children Sheila Parker, Andrew Mebs and Neill Mebs, as well as seven grandchildren Andrea, Jordan, Hayden, Keyton, Yasmin, Kylie and Dale.
The family would like to say thank you for the care and support provided by the staff and Evergreen Care Home during Penny’s time there. Details regarding her celebration of life are to be finalized.
