Warm days are still persisting in the qathet region but signs of fall are starting to show.
The Weatherhood forecast for today, Thursday, September 12, indicates sun and cloud in the morning, at 15 degrees Celsius, but the cloud will dissipate by noon with a high temperature of 19 degrees. Friday, September 13, there will be a mix of sun and cloud and a high of 15 degrees with a 56 per cent chance of rain by 6 pm.
Saturday and Sunday there is a mix of sun and cloud, with a chance of showers in the afternoon and daytime temperatures between 14 and 16 degrees.
According to Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC), meteorological fall has arrived, beginning on September 1 and lasting until November 30, marking the transition between the warmest season, summer, and the coldest season, winter. The fall forecast for the southern west coast of BC predicts above-average temperatures.
Fall Fair this weekend
The 2024 Fall Fair will be happening Saturday, September 14, and Sunday, September 15, from noon to 5 pm both days. The annual gathering takes place at Paradise Exhibition Grounds at 4365 Mcleod Road and entry is by donation.
This will be the 92nd year for the event, which is a space for local farmers and growers to exhibit their harvesting and husbandry skills, and an important fundraiser for Powell River Farmers’ Agricultural Institute.
The regular Powell River Farmers' Market (PRFM) will take place on both days as well as the exhibition.
Farmers' market nutrition program
Did you know PRFM has been supporting the BC Farmers' Markets Nutrition Coupon Program initiative for more than a decade?
In a previous conversation with the Peak, PRFM manager Juhli Jobi said that the program provides low income families, seniors and new moms, with nutrition coupons that can be used at the market to purchase unprocessed, nutrient dense foods that include vegetable starts, fruit and vegetables, eggs, nuts, meat and honey.
"Recipients receive $27 per week from our community partners over a 16-week period that they can spend when they visit the market," said Jobi. "While the majority of these user groups have been funded through the BC Government, our seniors have been relying on local fundraising efforts in our community to support them."
Jobi said that over the years people have hosted longtable dinners on farms, created one-time fundraisers or committed to a percentage of sales going to the seniors program.
"You can fully fund one participant for the season and their household for under $500," said Jobi. "If you or someone you know can help, please email us at
[email protected] or call 604.414.5076.”
