The 38th annual Texada Island Sandcastle Weekend took place this past weekend and drew hundreds of attendees to activities at Gillies Bay, Gillies Bay Ball Park and Shelter Point.
Sunday, July 21, included the highly anticipated sand sculpture contest that began at Gillies Bay at 9:30 am, until the tide rushed in around 2:30 pm. Cooler weather and rainfall was a welcome relief for sand sculpture competitors, who were out in the elements for most of the day building their masterpieces made out of sand and water.
A creation called Toby the Spider won first prize in the adult category; the Hafezi family won first prize in the family category for their sculpture of a lumber truck; in the teen category the sculpture titled Big Fat Snake won first prize, and in the 12 and under category a sculpture titled G-nomes won first prize.
