MIDWINTER SUN: Currently eastern Canada and many parts of BC are experiencing arctic air flows and wintery storm systems and extreme cold. The forecast for the qathet region this week is warmer than meteorologists predicted. Today, Monday, February 10, the daytime temperature will hover around one degree Celsius, with sun, dropping to minus seven overnight. The photo above was taken at Second Beach.

A winter storm system hit Atlantic and Maritime provinces this weekend, bringing snow, strong wind gusts and dangerous waves and swells over open waters. Luckily, the qathet region has remained only a tad below zero in the daytime this past week, including today, Monday, February 10.

While the local temperature has been chillier at night, dropping to minus seven and eight degrees, it's not the bitter cold some parts of BC and Canada are experiencing. The Weatherhood app indicates that there is a very low chance of snow falling this week, but on Sunday, February 16, there is an 87 per cent chance of snow in the forecast. There will be a mix of sun and cloud later in the week.

In BC, February is the time for king tides, or the highest tides of the year. At 5:25 am this morning, the high tide was at 16 feet, or 4.8 metres. The next high tide will be at 2:58 pm this afternoon, at just over 14 feet, or 4.7 metres.

February is Black History Month and once again, the African and Afro-Caribbean Association of qathet is to organizing its second annual event, called the Black History Month Celebration, which will take place on Saturday, February 15, at Dwight Hall, located at 6274 Walnut Street, at 12 pm.
