SEEKING WITNESSES: Powell River RCMP are seeking information regarding an incident where a young child was approached by a man in a black pickup truck near the intersection of Field Street and Manson Avenue.

Powell River RCMP officers are looking to speak to the driver of a black pickup truck regarding an incident that occurred on December 21 at approximately 3:30 pm near the intersection of Field Street and Manson Avenue.

According to a media release from staff sergeant Rod Wiebe, it is alleged that a young student walking home from Assumption School was approached by a male in a black truck who stopped and asked if the child was okay and if they needed a ride.

“The child did the right thing by not engaging the driver and running to a safe location,” stated Wiebe. “The vehicle did not follow the child.

“The truck is described as a newer black truck with a canopy and the driver is described as a Caucasian male in his 30s or 40s, stubble beard, and a scab on the left side of his face, wearing a dark green toque and having a fit build.”

Wiebe stated that police are asking anyone in the area during that time who may have witnessed the occurrence or may have dashcam footage to call the detachment at 604.485.6255.

“While the intention of the driver is not known at this time,” added Wiebe, “this is a good reminder for parents to discuss stranger safety with their children and have a safe plan to follow should something like this occur.”
