Bone prompts probe

Remains in shoe not human

RCMP have confirmed bone found in a discarded shoe at a Powell River beach is not human.

Powell River RCMP received information Saturday, March 5, that a running shoe with a bone inside had been discovered at a beach south of the city. RCMP responded to the scene and with the help of the BC Coroner’s Service realized the bone is not human.

After a news story on the event aired on television Sunday night a man called RCMP to say that back in January he had put a bone in a discarded shoe on the beach in order to get it away from his dog. RCMP have since confirmed that the bone is from an animal, possibly a seal.

RCMP spokesperson Sergeant Cam Muir said the investigation has been concluded and the incident has no relation to the 10 severed feet in shoes that have washed up on BC and Washington shores since 2007.
