According to Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) winter tires are not just for snow-covered roads.
"The softer rubber composition provides better traction in cold conditions, even on dry pavement. The threshold is 7 degrees Celsius, when temperatures consistently dip below this point, winter tires do the job that all-season/regular tires can't do," said the ECCC public safety message.
Legal requirements
In some provinces, winter tires aren't just recommended, they're required:
British Columbia: October 1 to March 31 on most highways (extended to April 30 on some routes).
