AFTER STORM: Rain and wind storms hit the qathet region last Friday and Saturday, but the clouds have parted and the sun has come back, today, Wednesday, October 23. The creek at Willingdon Beach [above] is rising and salmon are slowly making their way back to spawn.

The Weatherhood station located on the roof of the Peak office on Marine Avenue is indicating a high temperature of nine degrees Celsius today, with a mix of sun and cloud for Wednesday, October 23, and a slim chance of rain.

Thursday, October 24, there is a 30 per cent chance of rain showers in the daytime and a daytime temperature of eight degrees, dropping to four degrees overnight. Friday, Saturday and Sunday there is a high chance of precipitation in the forecast, with an accumulation of up to 30 millimetres of rain.

For Monday, October 28, the sun is expected back with a daytime temperature of seven degrees and a 40 per cent chance of rain.

According to Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) winter tires are not just for snow-covered roads.

"The softer rubber composition provides better traction in cold conditions, even on dry pavement. The threshold is 7 degrees Celsius, when temperatures consistently dip below this point, winter tires do the job that all-season/regular tires can't do," said the ECCC public safety message.

Legal requirements

In some provinces, winter tires aren't just recommended, they're required:

British Columbia: October 1 to March 31 on most highways (extended to April 30 on some routes).
