Now that Thanksgiving gatherings are over, folks are gearing up for spooky Halloween festivities in the coming week, in the qathet region.
Scary maze with a new twist
Last year, the Halloween Maze at the Powell River Racquet Centre, located on Joyce Avenue, saw close to 600 attendees go through dark tunnels, filled with fog and spookers [someone meant to frighten someone walking through the maze], scaring many parents and entertaining their kids, said event organizer Mitch Kenyon, in an email to the Peak.
"We are back again this year, and along with the usual maze of dark tunnels, animatronics, and spookers, this year’s maze will feature the Hellevator," stated a media release about the maze.
Kenyon said that, last year, a number of small children, the first night, were too scared to go in the maze, so they constructed a mini-maze for children younger than five-years of age.
"The mini-maze will be back again this year. and the big maze is recommended for anyone aged five to 95," said Kenyon.
The maze is free, but donations are accepted to cover costs, with any surplus money going to the Powell River Action Centre Food Bank, the release stated. This year, the maze will run for three nights, Friday, October 25, Saturday, October 26, and Sunday, October 27, from 6 to 8 pm.
Haunted walks
qathet Museum and Archives (qMA) is once again hosting haunted walking tours in Townsite this Halloween season, due to its popularity last year.
The tour is approximately 40-minutes to an hour long and will start and end at Henderson House on Walnut Street.
qMA has described the walking tour as a guided walk by local history keepers that may answer questions one may have about who lived in the historic Henderson House, and do they still live there? Or, is there a torture-loving dentist in the Patricia Theatre?
Groups of up to 10 people can be accommodated and registration is required for the date of October 21. Walk-ins will be accepted on other dates. Email [email protected] for more information.
Witches and ghouls paint night
Edie Rae's Cafe, located in the Old Courthouse Inn, in Townsite, will be hosting a witchy painting night, led by artist Ursula Medley, the evening of Tuesday, October 29.
"It's the season of the paranormal and what better way to celebrate than to paint your next masterpiece at our sip and paint event?" stated a message from the organizers on Facebook. "Grab a friend, relative, ghost, ghoul, goblin or werewolf, it doesn't matter who or what they are, just as long as they are old enough [legal drinking age], are capable of holding a wand, and are able to sit, relax, sip and paint."
