As part of an International Women's Day feature, the Peak asked qathet region entrepreneurs about their journeys in business. Here are the responses from Shirley Dunning (Sure Hands Reflexology):
What advice do you have for aspiring women entrepreneurs or professionals?
The biggest thing is to stay focused, even when things get hard, so I would say rest if you must, but don’t give up.
What inspired you to pursue a career in your industry?
I met a client whose son was a reflexologist years ago. I was very impressed with the knowledge he had about the body and how it helped people and how his mother, who is 100 years old, was so healthy. I felt that it had to do with the fact that he understood how all the systems worked and how it was related to the feet. That impressed me so much that made me want to become a reflexologist.
How has your journey shaped your approach to business?
When the going got tough, I would often want to give up. But I would say “rest if you must, but don’t give up.” It made me a stronger person and a better reflexologist, and appreciate when I actually passed my test toward my career, and helped me to be a stronger person inside as well. Now I think of my daughter and it makes me want to help people more in honour of her, so people don’t have to suffer as much. I want to help other people to get better and help them be well.
