Mapping the future for families

Workshop captures spirit of home

Mapping the heart of Powell River is a project that brings people together to explore ideas “from the heart” in a creative way. On March 27, Family Place will host a Family Mapping workshop and anyone can take part.

Community mapping allows people of all ages and abilities, and from all walks of life, to participate in telling their stories, dreams and experiences. The maps provide a picture of the community that reflect the past, the present and may shed light on possibilities for the future.

A variety of community maps have already been created at events including Family Literacy Day and at the Lund Christmas Craft Fair.

The maps can be made from any materials that the makers choose, and no particular artistic skill is required. For example, an interactive digital map, Maps, Myths and Magic, that represents the Powell River Cultural Waterfront Path section of the Sunshine Coast Trail, has been completed.

Now, the project would like to record the perspective of families and children in our region. Families, friends and the people who work with families, are invited to a Family Mapping workshop from 12:30 to 2:30 pm on Wednesday, March 27 at Family Place. A soup lunch will be available for all participants.
