Kathy Maitland has been organizing book sales for Kiwanis Club of Powell River for over ten years but she says, it's time for the organization to move on. Maitland can often be seen wearing a T-shirt that expresses how she feels: "I can't live without books."
Her love of reading and books came from spending lots of time at libraries as a kid, and that influence can be seen in how the books have been organized for the book sales. Hundreds of books sit inside neatly arranged boxes; all categorized by book type, so that browsers can easily see what they are looking for.
In the past, the books had been on trolleys and shelves just like a library, but the club recently had to get rid of them as the club decided to downsize. Most of the money from book sales and other Kiwanis initiatives go towards charities such as Cops for Cancer. Book lovers will have two more chances to take advantage of very decently priced books, and the club's popular, fill-a-bag initiative.
Saturday, March 2, from 10 am to 1pm with the final book sale being June 22, both take place at 4943 Kiwanis Avenue. Maitland said the club has found a new source of income through shredding books and paper to be sold to buyers for various construction projects.
