On this day:
In 1892, Lizzie Borden was accused of murdering her parents in their home in Fall River, Massachusetts. She was acquitted and no one else was ever charged.

In 1914, nearly six weeks after the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand, the British Empire (including Canada) declared war on Germany for invading Belgium. The United States proclaimed its neutrality in the conflict, which was underway due to a domino effect of political and historical alliances. More than 650,000 Canadians were involved in the First World War, in the trenches, at sea, in the air and on the homefront. More than 66,000 died and another 172,000 were injured before the war ended on November 11, 1918.

In 1944, one of the most well-known figures of the 20th century, teenage diarist Anne Frank, was captured and arrested with her sister Margot, their parents and four others by the Gestapo after hiding for two years inside a building in Amsterdam. Anne and Margot died at the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp in Germany.
