Former Powell River Kings' forward Nic Porchetta is one of five BC Hockey League (BCHL) players who will receive funds through the league's scholarship program.

Porchetta, who spent parts of five seasons with the Kings from 2018 to 2023, finished the 2022/2023 season with West Kelowna Warriors after a trade from his hometown team. He joins recipients including former teammate Dylan Hewlett, who also skated for the Kings in five different seasons and recently committed to playing at Simon Fraser University, as well as Jordan Fairlie (Prince George Spruce Kings), Jordan Hendry (Trail Smoke Eaters) and Ayden Third (Vernon Vipers).

Each player will receive a $2,000 scholarship award to attend a Canadian post-secondary institution. Porchetta, who scored 29 goals and added 32 assists during his 153-game BCHL career, is enrolled at Vancouver Island University.

The scholarship program is designed to provide graduating BCHL players with financial support to use in the next step of their hockey and academic careers, according to the league. Winners were selected based on their academic track record, their stated future career and education goals, and their time spent in the BCHL.

“Education has always been a key focus for our league and this scholarship program is a great way to reward our athletes that excel in the classroom, while giving them the financial support needed to continue playing hockey at a Canadian post-secondary school,” stated BCHL commissioner Steven Cocker. “Thank you to our founding partners at Rogers, together with Shaw, for supporting this initiative the past four seasons.”

Fairlie will attend the University of Toronto next year, Hendry will head to the University of Waterloo and Third will take classes at the University of Regina.

Through the first four years of their partnership, Rogers, Shaw and the BCHL have awarded a total of $40,000 in scholarship funds to 20 different graduating players from the league.
