On this day:
In 1492, Christopher Columbus’ voyage to the present-day Americas began when he set sail from Spain.

In 1936, Jesse Owens won the 100-metre sprint at the Berlin Olympics, his first of four gold medals at the quadrennial sporting event.

In 1952, the Summer Olympic Games in Helsinki, Finland, where 17-year-old George Genereux of Saskatoon claimed Canada’s only gold medal (trap shooting), came to an end. Genereux later received the Lou Marsh Award as Canada’s athlete of the year.
