On this day:
In 1714, at the age of 49, Britain’s Queen Anne died and was succeeded by King George I.

In 1882, Canada joined Austria-Hungary, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Norway, Russia, Sweden, the United Kingdom and the United States to participate in the first International Polar Year, a 13-month-long research and exploration undertaking to learn about the Arctic.

In 1957, Canada and the United States announced the creation of the North American Air Defense Command (NORAD).
