On this day:
In 1871, British Columbia joined Canadian Confederation when Ottawa agreed to certain conditions, one being construction of a permanent railroad link between the country's east and west coasts.

In 1968, Chicago hosted the first International Special Olympics Summer Games.

In 1969, Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin became the first astronauts to walk on the moon after their Apollo 11 lunar module reached the surface.

In 1976, Viking I landed on Mars, becoming the first spacecraft to land on the red planet and complete its mission.
