On this day:
In 1844, a mob in Illinois killed Mormon leader Joseph Smith and his brother.

In 1991, Yugoslav troops invaded Slovenia following Slovenia's declaration of independence, marking the beginning of the Ten-Day War. A number of ethnic conflicts followed, leading to the break-up of Yugoslavia and resulting in at least 140,000 deaths.

In 2003, the Government of Canada proclaimed that Canadian Multiculturalism Day would be observed annually on June 27. The Department of Canadian Heritage describes the day as “an opportunity to celebrate our diversity and our commitment to democracy, equality and mutual respect and to appreciate the contributions of the various multicultural groups and communities to Canadian society.”
