LAST DAY OF FEBRUARY: The year 2024 is a leap year and today, February 29, is called leap day, indicating the extra day added to the calendar. The Weatherhood app has snow in the forecast for today. The photo above of a tree frog, which can leap quite easily from tree to tree, was taken in qathet by Andrew Bryant.

Leap day and leap year happen every four years thanks to the creation of the Julian calendar by Julius Caesar in 45 BCE. That means February 2024 has an extra day, today, February 29.

The Earth does not complete its orbit of the sun in exactly 365 days but in 365 days, 5 hours, 48 minutes, and 56 seconds. If our calendars did not account for those extra minutes each year, our seasons would eventually be the opposite of what they are now.

This means in 100 years our calendars would be off by 25 days and eventually the Northern hemisphere's winter solstice would occur in June.

Today's leap day; February 29, the Weatherhood app is forecasting snow in the qathet region, with a high of 5 degrees Celsius and a low of zero. The sun is setting today at 6 pm sharp and tomorrow's sunrise will occur at 6:58 am.
