It doesn’t get better than summertime on the Sunshine Coast; the outdoor activities are endless. So how do you improve on it? Combine two of the best, fishing and golf, into one new super event: Fins & Skins.
“I was looking around the room one men’s night and realized that most of the golfers also fished,” says tournament organizer Josh Statham. “It seemed crazy to me that we didn’t have a Fins & Skins already.”
Fins (for fishing) & Skins (a form of golf match) is not just a catchy name. It is more commonly a freshwater, one-day event, but the Powell River version has been expanded and customized for the west coast. Teams of four will fish on Saturday, July 20, then play a scramble (best ball) on Sunday, July 21.
Each team will deduct half a stroke per pound of their biggest salmon from their net golf score, with the lowest score taking home top prize.
Last year was the inaugural event with 10 teams participating. This year registration is already up, with lots of time for teams to still join.
A salmon dinner, prizes and silent auction will follow the golf on day two. Top prize is a two-day guided sturgeon fishing trip to Fraser River Lodge, plus additional prizes for best net golf score, top salmon and top bottom fish.
“The coordination with the pro shop and kitchen staff at Myrtle Point Golf Club, our many sponsors, volunteers and participants has aided in the success of this new event,” says Statham. “It could grow and attract teams from out of town, and it’s already become an exciting new tournament at Myrtle Point.”
Fins & Skins aims to deliver a first-class experience for all of the participants, with great prizes and good times, according to Statham.
“It also has a local philanthropic element, with net proceeds going to the Powell River Salmon Society,” he added.
