City of Powell River’s Health and Wellness Fair is set to take place on October 26, marking the return of an event last held in 2017. Alexandra Young, the city’s health and fitness program coordinator, spearheaded the effort to revive the fair, which promises to be a rich resource for community members seeking to enhance their health and wellness.

“The inspiration behind this year’s fair came from the success of events in 2016 and 2017,” explains Young. “We’re excited to bring it back, offering a fair where people can not only get their flu shot, but also learn about various wellness resources available to them.”

Visitors to this year’s fair can expect a day filled with interactive exhibits and engaging presentations from fitness instructors, health practitioners and wellness experts. Attendees will also have the opportunity to explore various stations, including a flu clinic hosted by Vancouver Coastal Health, a CPR training station and interactive experiences such as spin bikes and hearing tests.

“People regularly attend flu clinics at the complex, so we saw this as an opportunity to surround them with other resources that promote overall health,” says Young. “It’s important to have a multidisciplinary approach that includes everything from recreational activities to mental health check-ins and holistic nutrition.”

Throughout the day, a series of half-hour presentations will cover a wide range of topics, beginning at 10:30 am with Christine Masters and her Drums Alive program. The lineup also includes presentations on mental health by VK Wellness, naturopathic solutions from Dr. Lani Nykilchuk, sessions on yoga, personal training, local herbal remedies and nutrition.

“These presentations offer a chance for attendees to pop in and out, gaining valuable insights into areas of health that matter to them,” adds Young.

Vendors will offer a glimpse into the many resources available in the qathet community. Exhibits will feature everything from reiki practitioners and pickleball organizations, as well as seniors' services and a new organization: ElderDog Canada.

“Our goal is to create an event that’s inclusive and accessible to everyone,” says Young. “There’s something for all ages, whether you’re looking to try a new fitness class, learn about first aid or ask questions about your hearing.”

Young sees this as a critical time to encourage immune-boosting activities like regular exercise and to make services like the flu clinic easily accessible.

“This time of year, it’s important to think about our health and the steps we can take to stay well,” she said. “We’re encouraging people to take part in exercise, consider vaccination and connect with resources that can support their overall well-being.”

To make the day even more engaging, attendees can enter a draw for various health-related door prizes, including Yeti water bottles and exercise equipment, aligning with the fair’s focus on wellness.

“I hope people walk away with a better understanding of the resources available to them and that practitioners leave with new connections and opportunities for growth,” adds Young. “Whether we inspire someone to book a personal training session or simply open the door for people to ask questions, it is about making a positive impact.”

Young hopes even those new to health and wellness events will find something that resonates with them. With free admission and various activities to explore, she believes the fair presents a low-pressure way for people to engage with their health.

“Whether you want to come for a quick visit or stay for the presentations all day, there’s something for everyone. It’s a great opportunity to chat with local experts and take steps toward a healthier lifestyle.”

The 2024 Health and Wellness Fair will take place from 10 am to 2 pm in the upper foyer at Powell River Recreation Complex.
