With the hope of increasing the number of residents who discover its tremendous recreation opportunities, City of Powell River’s parks, recreation and culture department is continuing its tradition of offering a wide variety of new and interesting programming, classes and events this fall.
City of Powell River is releasing its Fall 2018 Active Living Guide this week and taking another step toward achieving the city’s goal of becoming the healthiest region in the province.
“Every season we come out with new programs and activities and this fall is no different,” says manager of recreation Neil Pukesh.
Copies of the Active Living Guide are being distributed inside the August 15 issue of Peak Midweek and can be picked up at Powell River Recreation Complex, City Hall and Tourism Powell River. The guide is also available at powellriverprc.ca, as is registration for all programs and classes.
Pukesh says the parks and recreation department is gearing up to launch its new online registration system so patrons can register online for classes from the comfort of their homes.
“We just implemented new software that’s going to allow people to access programming opportunities and book programs even faster and easier than what we've had in the past,” says Pukesh.
People interested in registering for classes can now go online, log in, create their own accounts and easily schedule family activities all at the click of a button, says Pukesh.
Parents of preschool-age children will not want to miss some of the child-focused community recreation programming in store this fall.
"We have lots of great programs coming up, including a lot of early years programming designed for children aged one to five years old,” adds Pukesh.
For children into the muckier side of life, the department has the perfect recipe for fun: slime classes.
"What's really cool in our children's programs is the craze around making slime,” says Pukesh.
Two new programs are planned, one called Mini Slimmers and the other called All About Slime, both sure to please the little ones, he adds.
With the coming of a new season of hockey, new ice arena programs are also planned. Pukesh says that the city rec department has partnered with Factory Hockey, a hockey skills development organization, to meet a growing demand in the community over the past four years for an adult learn-to-play-hockey program.
"Come out and learn to play hockey with Joe Calderone,” says Pukesh. “He puts on a really good program."
An adult hockey program will run on Tuesday nights in the fall.
On the swimming side, the department will be offering a new Adult Masters Fitness Swimming program in the mornings on Tuesdays and Thursdays that focuses on all-around body fitness, says Pukesh.
As children go back to school, fall is often a time for families to fall back into their fitness routines or even start new ones, says Pukesh.
“It's always a busy time of year for us,” he adds.
On the health and fitness side of programming, the complex’s addition of 10 brand new spin bikes will facilitate classes for all ages, he says.
“We’re going to be offering a number of new classes this fall with our new inventory of spin bikes,” he adds.
Four classes, including Intro to Spin, Youth Spin, Power Spin and Spinning for Seniors, will be starting September 20. The classes are all pre-registered and have limited space, so Pukesh recommends registering early.
Offering a seniors’ spin class provides an exciting opportunity to expand its age-friendly programs, he says.
On that topic, the department is pleased to be able to continue its health and fitness classes for seniors, including its Water Wellness, Hearts in Motion Walking Club and Choose to Move programs, he adds.
“We have a lot of seniors' programs underway,” says Pukesh.
