Letter: Hockey hospitality exceeds expectations

"Sports is such an incredible entity that brings people together and allows its participants to travel far and wide."

To the City of Powell River, thank you for being such a gracious host to the Jackson Hole Moose hockey team two weeks ago [“Powell River Regals open home schedule with pair of wins,” October 23].

As the sports editor for the Jackson Hole News & Guide, I followed the team to Canada to experience the trip firsthand. Many in the travelling group had been to British Columbia before, but none had ever been to Powell River, and at the conclusion of the trip, expectations had been exceeded by all.

To Tod English and the Powell River Regals, thank you for giving the Moose an incredible opportunity to begin the hockey season. Players and coaches alike were consummate professionals.

I can also say confidently that Matt Peters was a highlight of the trip, as he shuttled the team around from ferry to ferry and from hotel to rink, in addition to serving as Jackson’s emergency back-up goalie. Your red and white helmet looked classy with the Moose’s red game sweaters, Matty.

Everywhere we went, we were greeted with such warm hospitality.

From the first full day in town at the Myrtle Point Golf Club and Costa Del Sol, all throughout the week at the recreation complex, Coastal Cookery, the Shinglemill, the Carlson Club, Little Curry Hut and any other place where a Jackson resident walked into, the neighbourliness from our neighbours to the north was incredible.

Thank you to Maddie, to Stew and Carl, to Megan, the whole staff of the Town Centre Hotel, and to the cab drivers who shuttled us around town, for making us feel welcome.

Sports is such an incredible entity that brings people together and allows its participants to travel far and wide. We are so fortunate that we had an opportunity — with an excuse to play a couple of hockey games — to visit the beautiful community of Powell River, and to you, we are also grateful.

Kyle Leverone, team owner Bob Carruth and the Jackson Hole Moose hockey club.
