Athletes from around the area participated in the North Island Track and Field Championships held at Timberlane Park last week.
Twelve Brooks Secondary School athletes took part in the championship, which included 28 events both on track and field.
Calli-Ann Abbott had a winning day, taking gold by dominating the girls’ 80-metre hurdles and triple jump. She also placed a photo-finish second in the 200-metre event.
Zane Hernandez placed second in senior shot put.
Keegan Chard-Hill, grade eight, received a silver medal in the grade nine boys’ 3,000-metre event.
Zack Bolan, grade eight, placed third in grade nine javelin having competed only once before in the event.
Jacob Bridger took bronze in the senior men’s 110-metre hurdles.
David Rupf won silver in grade nine long jump and bronze in the 1,500-metre race.
Myles Elliot placed fourth in both the 800 metres and high jump events.
Brandon Rairie won bronze in senior boys’ triple jump and fifth in the long jump events.
It was a long day for all of the athletes, said Ken Holley, one of Brooks’s track and field coaches, and “they should be proud of their efforts and their ability to challenge themselves.”
