Special teams lead Alberni Valley to win over Powell River Kings

Bulldogs score twice on power plays, once shorthanded to defeat visitors

Special teams accounted for four of the five goals in a BC Hockey League (BCHL) game at Weyerhaeuser Arena in Port Alberni on Wednesday, February 16.

Alberni Valley Bulldogs converted two power play opportunities into goals, and added another while shorthanded en route to a 4-1 win over the visiting Powell River Kings.

Powell River’s only goal, the seventh of the season for Ethan Riesterer, also came with an extra attacker. Hunter Andrew drew an assist on the play.

Alberni opened the scoring with the only even-strength goal of the game at the 4:30 mark of the first period. The teams traded goals in period two, then the home team padded its 2-1 lead with a pair of insurance goals in the third period.

Goaltender Kenny Gerow made 32 saves for the Kings, who were outshot 36-28. Attendance was 817.

Kings host Langley Rivermen at Hap Parker Arena on Friday, February 18, and Saturday, February 19. Game time is 7 pm both nights.
