Home team dominates on power plays, earns split of weekend games versus Nanaimo Clippers

Power plays were the difference in Powell River Kings’ 5-2 win over the visiting Nanaimo Clippers on Saturday, October 14.

Kings converted five of their nine opportunities with the extra skater into goals, while the Clippers went one for nine on their own power plays in the second BC Hockey League (BCHL) game between the two teams in 24 hours.

Anthony Lucarelli, Will Jones, Alexi Van Houtte-Cachero, Christian Maro and Noah Eyre scored for the home team, which led 2-1 following the first period and 4-2 after 40 minutes.

Goaltender Owen Crudale turned aside 37 of the 39 shots he faced to earn first star honours ahead of teammates Anthony Yu (second), who assisted on four goals, and Jones (third), who added two assists to go along with his second goal of the season. Nanaimo led on the shot clock, 39-37.

Van Houtte-Cachero also recorded a pair of assists, while Lucarelli and Eyre set up one goal each. Attendance at Hap Parker Arena was 980.

Nanaimo outscored Powell River 6-3 the night before.

Kings play in Coquitlam on Friday, October 20, before the second game of the weekend in Langley on Saturday, October 21.
