Salmon Arm Silverbacks secured an extra point on their visit to Powell River Recreation Complex with an overtime goal to defeat Powell River Kings on Saturday, October 28.

Kings’ top goal scorer Alexi Van Houtte-Cachero opened the scoring with his ninth of the BC Hockey League (BCHL) season on a power play late in the first period.

After Salmon Arm tied the score at one 2:35 into period two, Powell River’s top point-getter so far this season, Anthony Yu, gave his team another lead at the 5:02 mark, which held up until the final frame.

Silverbacks forced overtime with the only goal of the third period and sent fans home disappointed with the game winner 2:09 into the extra period. Attendance was 785.

Goaltender Tresor Wotton, who was named the game’s first star, made 29 saves for the Kings, who were outshot 32-29. Yu, who had one assist in the game to go along with his goal, received second star honours ahead of Salmon Arm’s Adam Boatter (third), who set up two goals. Will Jones and Thomas Belzil each helped set up one goal for the home team.

Yu has 19 points in 12 games this season, two ahead of teammate Noah Eyre (17) and three more than Jones (16). Van Houtte-Cachero is the only other King in double-digits with 13.

Powell River hosts Trail Smoke Eaters at 7 pm on Friday, November 3, before embarking on a two-game road trip to Vancouver Island with stops in Victoria (November 4) and Alberni Valley (November 5).
